Project | Braille Nametags

Last month, the class theme for my afternoon class centralized around Helen Keller and others with disabilities. We did many projects together that had them step into the shoes of those who are missing senses. We've done activities that have included them being blindfolded, hand signaling partner games, and science projects that have tested their sense of smell. This project is just one out of the many we did together that kept the class engaged and excited for the the next project. My students used braille worksheets that we did earlier in the school day which contains a braille alphabet template. They traced the dots on rectangular paper and used split glued split peas over the traced dots. It was a successful project and I plan on doing it again with future students!

Project | Reptile Bracelets

Project | Reptile Bracelets

Any kid I've met has had a fascination with reptiles and dinosaurs. Their weird and fascinating creatures and its impossible for children to not be interested in them as they continue to discover and unfold mysteries in the world. I like to figure out individual interests in my class to tie them into concepts throughout the school year. This project was fun and simple, but don't underestimate its skill-building potential. My 1st and 2nd graders still struggle with being dexterous, so this project helped them practice building those skills.

Project | Overseas Volunteer Experience

Project | Overseas Volunteer Experience

About a year ago, I went on a trip to Laos and Thailand with The McConnell Foundation to learn the Lao language and history. While I was studying there, I also volunteered at colleges and elementary schools to assist students in learning English. Those six-weeks of volunteering was a life-changing experience that gave me sense that teaching would be the right career for me.
